Chapter 14: How Do You Know When God Speaks?

recording studio keyboard

BIRDIE –
Every Spring we made the 7-hour trip to Paducah, KY to record a soundtrack for a new musical.

1982 – Reflections
1983 – Prodigal Prince
1984 – Meet Me Here
1985 – Not Just Another Love Story
1986 – Papa, Me and the Gift of Love

REBECCA –
Year four I told my daddy that I felt led to write a show that was set during the days of World War II. He proudly served in the army during that war so I asked him to tell me about life back then. That’s when I wrote, “Not Just Another Love Story.”

BIRDIE –
Spring, 1985, I finished writing and arranging the music and we headed for Paducah, KY to make the soundtrack.

REBECCA –
Birdie was driving. I was helping her drive – from the passenger seat – if you know what I mean.

BIRDIE –
We were talking. I have no idea what we were talking about.

REBECCA –
Then, in the middle of that conversation, well...
I ...heard ...God.

BIRDIE –
I noticed that Rebecca got unusually quiet.

REBECCA –
It’s always unusual when I get quiet.

BIRDIE –
Then, seriously, but with a tone of confusion, she said,
“Birdie, I think God just spoke to me.”

I thought she was joking. So, I flippantly said: “Well! What did He say?”

REBECCA –
He said: “CALL THE COMPANY NARROWAY PRODUCTIONS.”

BIRDIE –
What company?!!

REBECCA –
I don’t know what company! I’m just telling you what He said!

BIRDIE –
Now, I know this sounds a bit odd, but I don’t remember anything about the discussion that followed. I don’t even remember questioning Rebecca as to why she was so sure it was God. But, from that point on, we started calling everything we did: “A NarroWay Production.”

REBECCA –
We told some people but we didn’t make a big deal out of it.

BIRDIE –
We didn’t worry about it or try to make it happen.

REBECCA –
We didn’t even understand it! ...We just accepted it.

BIRDIE –
Then we went on with life,
...doing what we thought God wanted us to do that day,
...in the place he had us that day
...and the next.

REBECCA –
The only difference was, from then on, we called ourselves: NarroWay.
We didn’t have an impressive way to print the name, so I wrote it in my own simple handwriting.

BIRDIE –
“Not Just Another Love Story” was the first show we ever referred to as: "A NarroWay Production." It is the only show we performed all three places we served (with re-writes). And it is the show that opened the NarroWay Theatre when we moved indoors.

REBECCA –
Year five – the church hired a new pastor.
That winter a church in Pikeville, KY called, wanting to hire us. But our youth were already working hard on a new musical and tour. We couldn’t bring ourselves to disappoint them so we quickly turned the opportunity down.

BIRDIE –
Months later they contacted us again.

REBECCA –
This time, though it broke our hearts, we knew we were supposed to go.

BIRDIE –
Summer, 1986 we said our good-byes.

BIRDIE –
To this day, we adore the people of Whitesburg, KY.

REBECCA –
Our dear friend, Connie, gave us a special going-away gift.
She copied where I had handwritten “A NarroWay Production” on a tour shirt and printed it on two watches.

Later on, you will find out how this became one of the most significant pieces of NarroWay’s history.

REBECCA –
And do you remember Kyra? The one who came to Jesus when her daughter Lynda ask her to come to church to earn points?
Well, right before we left, Kyra told me: “I had a dream last night. In the dream I saw you and Birdie standing on a stage in front of a big audience and they were all applauding.”
I looked at her and said: “You crazy thing!” And we laughed.

BIRDIE –
Throughout the years many people have asked us:
“How could you be sure it was God speaking?”

REBECCA –
At first, we didn’t know how to answer. Then, I stumbled upon Exodus 3:12.

BIRDIE –
In this Old Testament verse, God has just told Moses to lead Israel out of Egypt. Then God says: “I’m going to prove to you that it really is me (GOD!) telling you to do this.”

REBECCA –
That’s Birdie’s rendition. Here’s the NASB:
“And GOD said, ‘Certainly I will be with you, and this shall be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you: when you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall worship God at this mountain.’”

BIRDIE –
Perhaps when God said He would give a sign, Moses was expecting a fleece, like Gideon, or some other uncanny magic trick.
Nope....Didn’t happen!

REBECCA –
So ...how do you know for sure if it is God who has spoken?

When it’s all said and done.

Then, you’ll stand on the mountain and look where you have been, at all God has done.

You’ll fall on your knees and say: ..... “Well, I’ll be! That was GOD!!”
