Chapter 50: The End

rebecca hands out

REBECCA –
And so ... that’s the story of how NarroWay came to be.
And it all started waaaaay before it actually started,
with a Word from God,
in an unexpected moment,
at an unlikely place,
to an undeserving person.

“You will call the company NARROWAY PRODUCTIONS.”

BIRDIE –
It wasn’t spoken as an invitation: Will you start a company?

REBECCA –
It wasn’t a prediction: In the year 1996 you shall make preparations for a company at which time you shall call it NarroWay Productions.

BIRDIE –
It was a statement of fact.

REBECCA –
God was giving us a heads up: Hey girls, this is your future.

BIRDIE –
Remarkably, did you realize that in twenty years, neither Rebecca nor I have ever missed a show? Not even through a bout with breast cancer.

REBECCA –
So far, every time, for TWENTY YEARS, that this preshow announcement has played:
“And now, a special word of welcome from the writers and directors of NarroWay Productions: Yvonne Clark and Rebecca Martin” – by the grace of God, we have stepped out.

BIRDIE –
Performing 48 out of 52 weekends a year, that, in itself, is a miracle.

REBECCA –
There have been a few times when we split up to perform in two locations, like in 2015, when we took a cast to perform “The Real Christmas Story” in New York.

BIRDIE –
But, even then the two locations were connected on skype and google chat, communicating back and forth.

BIRDIE –
Rebecca and I have never taken it lightly that God gave us the name.

REBECCA –
Matthew 7:13-14 says : “Enter the narrow way; for wide is the gate and broad the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through. But small is the gate and narrow the way that leads to life and only a few find it.”

BIRDIE –
When we first started performing, there were times when we looked out into crowds numbering fewer than thirty, and we would say: The Bible was right about the NarroWay – only a few find it!

REBECCA –
It provided a bit of comic relief in times when we might have otherwise cried.

BIRDIE –
You see, theater has long had its Broadway. But the world needs to see the stories that Broadway will never tell. The world needs to sing the songs that Broadway will never sing.

REBECCA –
God surely must have thought that the world needs a NarroWay.

REBECCA –
Often times I’ve heard Christian speakers say: “I am not here to entertain you!” – as if entertainment is an ungodly thing.

BIRDIE –
The origin of the word “entertain” comes from French entretenir, based on Latin “inter” which means “among,” plus “tenere” which means “to hold.” The essence of the word means to hold a crowd’s attention so that they gain joy from the experience.

REBECCA –
If you’ve been to NarroWay you’ve heard this: “Entertainment is changing the world. We believe God has called us to change entertainment!”

BIRDIE –
As the ARMY of GOD, we MUST stake our claim in the kingdom of entertainment.

People are searching for ENJOYMENT!
People everywhere are seeking happiness, purpose, Truth!

REBECCA –
Yet they are finding their joy in drugs on the street, in porn on the internet, in filth on the television, in violence in their video games! Their “truth” is coming from being saturated by a secular, self-gratifying culture. ... Are we okay with that?

BIRDIE –
There is a desperate need for exceptional CHRISTIAN ENTERTAINMENT, entertainment that can compete with anything this world can offer!

REBECCA –
When Jesus gathered a crowd, what did he do?
He told STORIES – stories they could relate to.

BIRDIE –
He performed miracles (visible manifestations of God’s power).
Signs (instructing revelations about God).
Wonders (awe-inspiring spectacles). 1

REBECCA –
I had the privilege of taking several seminary classes under the legendary Dr. Clyde Francisco, professor of Old Testament studies. I’ll never forget the day he looked at our class full of forthcoming pastors and Christian educators and said:
“For God’s sake, class, never bore people with the Word of God.”

He never did. And I vowed, to the best of my ability, that I never would either.

BIRDIE –
So, as we come to the end of this blog series, you may ask: “What does the future hold for NarroWay Productions?” I guess that will be left to the head of the Company – God, and all those He calls to move her forward.

REBECCA –
We’ve never felt like we owned NarroWay.
We’ve never intentionally driven forth a manufactured vision for NarroWay.

BIRDIE –
Instead, we run the company the same way as we did when God first spoke.
We do the BEST we know to do TODAY and wait until HIS SPIRIT speaks again.

REBECCA –
Often times we are asked: “Where do you see NarroWay in ten years?”
If you ask what our long-range plan is for NarroWay, all we can say is this:
TO PLEASE GOD.

BIRDIE –
That may not set well with big banks and it isn’t the ideal business plan, but, honestly, we don’t know what else to say.

REBECCA –
All we know is, if we can accomplish this: TO PLEASE GOD - how can NarroWay possibly fail?

BIRDIE –
We DO have a vision for what God wants for NarroWay, but it will take millions of dollars to accomplish.

REBECCA –
Until we find a way to accumulate that much money, or figure out a strategy to raise it, or GOD lays it upon someone’s heart to miraculously provide it, then we, like Mary, the mother of Jesus, will ponder that dream in our hearts.

BIRDIE –
On behalf of Rebecca and myself, thank you for reading THE NARROWAY STORY. We plan to publish it in book form for those who don’t have internet access, and hope to devote proceeds into our property & building fund.

REBECCA –
Join us on April 5, 2017 as we begin our exciting brand new blog series: THAT’LL PREACH! Unique, life applications God has revealed personally to us in our times alone with Him.

BIRDIE & REBECCA –
Good day, ladies and gentlemen. And thank you for attending a NarroWay Production.

Millions of dollars you say? Is anything too hard for the Lord?

I'm a better person today because our paths crossed 30+ years ago. On behalf of my family and all the people that I come in contact with on a daily bases, thank you for helping mold me and for showing me that being a Christian is "cool and fun". That's what I saw in you when I first met you both. Your infectious, fun and loving personalities that made church and all things church FUN!

I sure do love you girls!
